Metaphors are not to be trifled with.” > _—Milan Kundera_ I’ve now [twice](https://bl.ocks.org/tophtucker/214ee520bfdfe8baabe5) put a lot of weight on a one-page classroom exercise prompt that may not have been intended to be load-bearing. Strogatz concludes the note with ideas for extending the metaphor; you learn by playing with the model, not just within it. It’s worth [reading in full](http://ai.stanford.edu/~rajatr/articles/SS_love_dEq.pdf); here’s the last paragraph: > “Additional complications may be introduced in the name of realism or mathematical interest. Nonlinear terms could be included to prevent the possibilities of unbounded passion or disdain. Poets have long suggested that the equations should be nonautonomous (‘In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love’—Tennyson). Finally, the term ‘many-body problem’ takes on new meaning in this context.” Attempting to turn solutions into narrative prose forces you to reckon with these features and limits. The abstractness makes for an interesting exercise in empathy! Writing without pronouns is a hell of a test of one’s implicit biases. And writing characters with no identity except their conditions and how they react to them tests the principle that everyone else is just _you_, at a different time. Some properties of this second-order linear system: - Because it’s autonomous (i.e. it doesn’t depend on time), it’s memoryless: an amnesiac waking up in love is indistinguishable from an 80-year-old man finally attaining it; the fifth pass over a point on the plane will always go the same way as the first four. None of the text can reference any past event! No past regrets can ruin future chances, and no past joys can amount to anything more than pleasure in the moment! (In some sense I guess it is ergodic, where life is not?) - Because it’s linear (the change in feeling at every moment is just the sum of scaled feelings), the only stable point is the exact center; things are slow near there, and get faster as you go farther out. The inertness of indifference is sort of intuitive, but it seems odd that here they can go forward faster and faster without bound! Here all relationships either converge to apathy, orbit perfectly equidistant from apathy, or diverge to infinitely intensifying emotions. I couldn’t easily write for the last case, so many stories just stop. - Because it’s a closed system with only two terms (nothing depends on anything other than ${R_name} or ${J_name}), nobody can come between them — and nothing is anyone’s fault but theirs. So it makes an excellent classroom exercise, a fine Internet toy, and a poor model for life. Not that you’d even be tempted! Or that that could ever be mistaken for being the point! I obviously love Strogatz’s note; I only feel guilty about my own overextension of it. > “In her sufferings she read a great deal and discovered that she had lost something, the possession of which she had previously not been much aware of: a soul. What is that? It is easily defined negatively: it is simply what curls up and hides when there is any mention of algebraic series.” > _—Robert Musil_ This all starts to sound like a Zoolander “three times bigger” joke, but of course the real issue with this has nothing to do with autonomy or linearity or ergodicity. It’s just that _any_ exercise in modeling this evokes a dark strain of thought. Suppose ${Romeo}, who doesn’t actually know that ${Juliet}’s feeling can be quantified as “${memory.state.J.toFixed(5)}” (whatever that means), instead has to build a model in ${Rp[2]} mind of how he _believes_ ${Juliet} to behave, from only observing ${Jp[2]} actions, and imagines that ${Jp[0]} has a similar model for ${Rp[1]}, and decides that ${Jp[0]} has a ${J_heart[1] > 0 ? 'positive' : 'negative'} coefficient in front of the term for ${Rp[2]} affection for ${Jp[1]}, and ${Romeo}’s been reading about pickup artistry on Reddit, and decides that ${Rp[0]} can just ${J_heart[1] > 0 ? 'flatter' : 'neg'} ${Juliet} until ${Jp[0]} likes ${Rp[1]}. Assuming some knowable stationary model, a bird’s eye view of the system, a set of levers — it sounds so creepy! So really a realistic model has to imagine that people are inferring the nature of others’ models of others, and may be repulsed by the model itself. My feelings for you depend on how I think you think my feelings behave. At some point you may start to wonder whether it may be a mistake to even think it coherent to attempt a compact pre-statement of the problem, [à la Kauffman](https://www.edge.org/response-detail/23801) — or whether, even if the process is deterministic, it may be so irreducibly complex that it cannot be decided any faster than it is lived, [à la Wolfram](http://www.wolframscience.com/nks/chap-12--the-principle-of-computational-equivalence/). Or! Or you could refuse to instrumentalize the sublime and subordinate it to your radical skepticism, and instead adopt as an axiomatic article of faith that you have direct access to the truth of another’s love, and act accordingly by a deontology of virtue. > “When we are thrust out into the world just as we are, we first have to identify with that particular throw of the dice, with that accident organized by the divine computer: to get over our surprise that precisely this (what we see facing us in the mirror) is our self. Without the faith that our face expresses our self, without that basic illusion, that arch-illusion, we can not live or at least we cannot take life seriously. And it isn’t enough for us to identify with our selves, it is necessary to do so passionately, to the point of life and death. Because only in this way we can regard ourselves not merely as a variant of a human prototype but as a being with its own irreplaceable essence.” > _—Milan Kundera_ `48:T30d8,possibleWorlds = [ { R: -1, J: 1, text: [ `Though ${Jp[0]} thought of ${Rp[1]} constantly, ${J_name} texted ${Rp[1]} only when ${Jp[0]} had a particularly good excuse.`, `After work drinks turned into a long night, ${J_name} called ${Rp[1]} from a cab. ${cap(Jp[0])} left only a short, stammered, fragmentary apology on the voicemail.`, `${cap(Rp[0])} didn’t begrudge ${J_name} ${Jp[2]} feelings, but ${Rp[0]} resented the drain.`, `${J_name}’s adoration felt fake to ${Rp[1]}, more like obsession than romance; was there even such a _thing_ as unrequited love?`, `${R_name} felt guilty and sometimes overcompensated by reaching out with what ${Rp[0]} saw as magnanimous charity, but ${Jp[0]} interpreted as signs for hope.`, `${R_name} tried to just ignore ${Jp[1]}; _sometimes you have to be mean so as not be cruel_.`, `${R_name} didn’t understand what version of ${Rp[1]}self ${J_name} seemed to have gotten into ${Jp[2]} head, extrapolated from fragments and scrubbed of the memories that didn’t fit.`, `${J_name} bought a book ${Jp[0]} remembered ${R_name} mentioning once. ${cap(Jp[0])} watched a movie ${Rp[0]}’d talked about, alone.`, `In lieu of talking to ${Rp[1]} directly, ${J_name} made ${Jp[2]} friends listen to stories and ideas and thoughts that, in ${Jp[2]} mind, were really directed at ${R_name}.`, `Sometimes ${R_name} just wanted ${Jp[1]} to fail.`, `${cap(Jp[0])} bundled up in like six layers and a scarf and braced against the cold unloving wind.`, `The memory of the hours when ${Jp[0]} was alone and thinking about ${Rp[1]} took the place of actual memories.`, `${J_name} wasn’t trying to make ${Rp[2]} life harder, but ${Jp[0]} was ready to go down with this ship.`, ] }, { R: 0, J: 1, text: [ `${cap(Rp[0])} saw ${Jp[1]} watching ${Rp[1]}, and registered it with interest if not reciprocation.`, `${J_name} peppered ${Rp[1]} with questions just to see how ${Rp[0]}’d react.`, `${R_name} didn’t want to disappoint ${Jp[1]} or lead ${Jp[1]} on.`, `When ${Rp[0]} bumped into ${Jp[1]}, ${Jp[0]} proposed lunch.`, `${cap(Rp[0])} didn’t know what ${Jp[0]} wanted.`, `${J_name} told ${Rp[1]} all the things ${Rp[0]} could do with ${Rp[2]} life.`, `${cap(Jp[2])} laugh surprised ${Rp[1]}.`, `When ${Jp[0]} laughed ${R_name} felt far away from ${Jp[1]}.`, `${cap(Jp[0])} saw ${Rp[2]} name on ${Jp[2]} lock screen and froze; _${R_name.split("").join(" ")}_… ${Jp[0]} wondered if any other name could sound as sweet.`, `${R_name} found ${Rp[2]} own name ridiculous, refused to merge with it, didn’t see what ${J_name} saw in it.`, `The air was cold.`, `“I don’t think you realize how much…”`, `${J_name} waved: “Come on!”`, `“You can stay if you want to.”`, `For ${Jp[1]} ${R_name} seemed to stand where otherwise there was something missing.`, `With ${Rp[1]} ${J_name} felt, despite the world, despite the pain, that this was one of the moments for the sake of which God had created the earth.`, `“${R_name}, take me somewhere we can be alone.”`, `${cap(Jp[0])} brought ${Rp[1]} a blanket.`, `“You all right?”`, ] }, { R: 1, J: 1, text: [ `They sat face to face until eye contact became a staring contest.`, `“Yes, exactly, that’s so true!”`, `After last call, when they finally got kicked out onto the dark street, neither made any motion to leave or say goodbye.`, `They walked to the water, content with nothing but the extremest limit of the land.`, `They stood back to back carrying on their separate conversations in polyphonous unison.`, `${cap(Rp[0])} caught ${Jp[2]} eye.`, `When ${Rp[0]} picked up ${Jp[0]} launched in as if they’d already been talking, and hung up with only the slightest indication of a goodbye.`, `Their texts were mostly negative space, crescendoing to a gap of time, abruptly returning to trail off with addenda and reminders.`, `They treaded water in wandering orbits.`, `The birds chirped and the flowers bloomed and the sun carried a rose between its teeth, and the rose was singing an aria.`, `They went hours without noticing they’d lost cell service in the hills.`, `They talked about the future.`, `The city swirled in eddies around them as they stood fast on the corner.`, `Their gaze strung a line so taut no others dared walk between it.`, `${cap(Jp[0])} laughed at what ${Rp[0]} was about to say.`, `“We’re lucky.”`, `${R_name} could hear ${Jp[2]} heart beating, and ${Jp[0]} could hear ${Rp[2]}, the human noise of neither one moving.`, `“I understand you.
