adding the json file with all the attributes of colorado counties named colorado - to transform from a shapefile to TopoJSON I imputed the file packet which included shp, dbf, prj, sbn, and sbx files into mapshaper - I then clicked simplfy to reduce the structure of the polygon features to 50% to decrease the amount of data - then I clicked export in the program to save the file as a TopoJSON

GeoJSON files are more simplified files that map polygons, lines, and points as geographic features. TopoJSON files are an extension of GeoJSON files, except they encode topology and the arrangement of how features share geometry. This eliminates features that share a border, like for counties, which makes the data file more concise.

to read JSON files, you have to transform them to feature collections, which then can be read through the dropdown arrows
