I'm trying to figure out if there's a "right" answer to the direction, one that is either dictated by conventions or by nature. To my limited understanding, outward movement is caused by disturbances, like a stone in a puddle, while beaches would be associated with inward movement (the waves rolling towards the coast).
I feel like my preference changes with the line distance that gets drawn: narrow = inward, wide = outward.
Did you find other references for the direction of the lines? Do you have a personal preference? (Apologies if you covered this elsewhere already)
Yes it's a curious point. I originally coded them all to radiate outwards and only right at the end it struck me maybe they should be going the other way. Thinking on the natural analogies: the waves on the shore makes more sense and yet they look weird to me going that way - in all the viz except the top 'Outer Hebrides' example in the next notebook.
I didn't find any references - though i only did a brief search. The closest academic paper (Semmo, A., Kyprianidis, J.E., Trapp, M. and Döllner, J., 2013, July. Real-time rendering of water surfaces with cartography-oriented design. In Proceedings of the Symposium on Computational Aesthetics (pp. 5-14).) never even mentions direction.
I'm going to add some reflections in the final notebook.
