Fortunately last year Google and Binomial released the [Basis Universal Texture Format](https://www.khronos.org/blog/google-and-binomial-contribute-basis-universal-texture-format-to-khronos-gltf-3d-transmission-open-standard) for working with GPU compressed textures.
