The colours, shapes, strokes and composition, these are pretty much about abstract painting. Apart from those, set some rules for the movement and that forms a dynamic abstract art piece. I understand and agree with that certain colours can trigger specific emotions to human beings. For example, yellow could disturb, while blue might make people feel good according to Kandinsky’s colour theory. And that’s how visual artists and painters use colours to make their audiences get into certain emotional states. What I found more controversial is how people define the properties of a certain colour. It is widely considered that green represents peace and the white colour represents innocence, thus giving a gentle and peaceful feeling to the viewer. However, I would like to question that those feelings are actually triggered by the association of the colours with the things we see in daily life. The plants in nature are mostly in green, thus we say that green is reminiscent of nature and it represents balance. Yet, the same colour takes on an entirely different meaning when associated with drugs or hazardous chemicals. Therefore, is the colour theory reliable and shared by everyone? Does the pure colour blocks mean the same to human as they do when having certain recognisable shapes? Somehow it suddenly strikes me that abstract art is just like an experiment of the above questions. Rather than pursuing the aesthetical pleasure, abstract art tries to explore the cooperation between colours, simple geometries, movements, and sound sometimes, and its emotional or spiritual meanings.
`34:T50e,md` This work is a combination of computing art and kinetic sculpture. The sculpture's main body is formed by ten rectangular aluminium frames, hanged somewhere close to a white wall with thin nylon strings. Hidden in the ceiling is a microcomputer that controls the length of strings, so that the square frames are moving and rotating from time to time. The frames move slowly and regularly, yet creating dynamic, non-repetitive and elegant patterns. Sometimes they are in a line, oscillating up and down, and sometimes they form irregular patterns. This kind of visual effect is achieved by the delicate computing of the offset of each rectangle and the timing of its movement. Clearly there are a series of algorithms that assign rules of the motion to these square frames, making them form different patterns. Therefore the work is more about time and morphing, rather than just composition. Technically, it involves the study of kinematics, geometry and computing. Apart from that, I consider the shadow-casting an essential part of the work, because it automatically transforms a 3D sculpture into a 2D dynamic graphics. With the light casting shadows from different angles, the graphics also change its shape accordingly. \nThe abstract work I made is quite \"organic\" (*like the process of growing in nature*). It is composed of a dancing line and a class of particles.\n\nThe line consists of a number of vertexes connected by beginShape() and endShape(). A cosine function is used to determine the vertexes' approximate position, and a 2D noise function is used to add deviations. In the particle system, each point has its own straightforward rules for for moving by simply setting its position, speed, acceleration, and direction (with the [random2D](https://p5js.org/reference/#/p5.Vector/random2D) function).\n\n\nI also did some experiments on the colours. The colours are not determined entirely at random, but according to some colour matching rules. When the coloured lines are overlaid with layers of the semi-transparent background, their colours change gradually and create quite interesting effects.\n\n\n\n`","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":11,"value":"md`\nHere's a B&W version.\n\n\nI feel the B&W version is probably neater and more elegant than the coloured version, but less tangible and emotionless. In a sense, more \"like\" a computer-genrated graphics (although they actually are).\n\nI feel that the dancing line and the particles are not really in cooperation in either version, which is a bit sad. They are still seperated elements and do not really work together to form a aesthetical satisfactory composition, although the overlaying of the semi-transparent layers of colours brought some extra suprises to the visual. I'll keep working on it though :) \n\n
