Living with Machines: How did machines change accidents?

Note: This notebook is currently undergoing active development and may contain unfinished or experimental features. We'd love to hear your feedback (digitalresearch@bl.uk); please allow for updates, changes, or potential instabilities while using this notebook.

How did the introduction of machines into the workplace and landscape change the lives of ordinary people in the nineteenth century? The Living with Machines project aimed to find out. A multidisciplinary research collaboration between the British Library and Alan Turing Institute with the Universities of Cambridge, East Anglia, Exeter, and London (QMUL), the project had several research strands.

A key research strand, designed from the beginning to include public contributions, investigated how machines changed accidents. We built crowdsourcing tasks on the Zooniverse citizen science platform in combination with data science and machine learning methods to find new insights within the pages of historical newspapers. This page focuses on data collected for this research. It visualises data from the original digitised newspaper articles, contemporary press directories that described individual newspapers, and classifications by Zooniverse volunteers.\n\nThe page begins with an overview then has options to filter data and allow more exploration.

Digitised newspaper pages: automatically-transcribed text and images of historical newspaper articles come from newspapers digitised for the Living with Machines project by FindMyPast. These articles were selected by searching for keywords related to accidents and machinery in close proximity in an article. As such, they're a small sample of articles from public domain newspapers; many, many more relevant articles are available on the British Newspaper Archive, and many are still yet to be digitised.

Crowdsourced classifications: volunteers on the Zooniverse platform were shown an article from a 19th century newspaper alongside options to label it - most importantly, did it mention an accident involving machinery? If an article did mention a specific accident involving machinery, then we asked additional questions it, such as the age and gender of any victims mentioned, the reported location of the accident, and the type of site where the accident occurred. Annotations were collected from 2020 to 2023. We exported the volunteers' annotations, comments and tags, and related information from the Zooniverse platform, and are working with that and data extracted from natural language processing/machine learning, for analysis and presentation.
