Living with Machines is a multidisciplinary research collaboration between the British Library and Alan Turing Institute with the Universities of Cambridge, East Anglia, Exeter, and London (QMUL). Using data science and crowdsourcing tasks on the Zooniverse platform to ask historical questions and find new insights from millions of pages of newspapers, maps, books and more. Living with Machines is broken down into several smaller sub-projects.

All data points come from Mitchells Press Directories information processed by the Living with Machines project. This project worked with digitised newspapers in the public domain, a proportion of digitised newspapers available on the British Newspaper Archive, which is a proportion of all newspapers published. Annotations created by volunteer contributions, are collected and exported from the Zooniverse platform, and also data extracted from natural language processing/machine learning, for analysis and presentation.
