Our new guest roles let you add members to your workspace while restricting their access to specified notebooks, secrets, and databases. Members control the information shared with guests. Workspace editors can then share a notebook with the guest on a per notebook basis. - **Guest Viewer**: Similar to the existing Viewer role in its ability to read, search and comment, but only on notebooks explicitly shared with them. - **Guest Editor**: Similar to the existing Editor role in its ability to read, search, comment, and edit, but only on notebooks explicitly shared with them. Guest members cannot create or fork notebooks, update the sharing for other members on a notebook and only have access to databases and secrets allowed by workspace owners. Head to your [workspace membership settings](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/team-creation-and-administration?collection=@observablehq/accounts-and-workspaces#cell-127) to add your first guest.4a:T5dc,--- February 17, 2023 ### Manipulate columns directly in the Data Table Cell We've made some improvements to how you interact with columns in the [Data Table Cell](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/data-table-cell)! - **Resize Columns**: If your column name or column values are truncated due to length, you can now resize the column by dragging the divider to see the entire value. - **Hide/Show Columns**: As you inspect the data in the table, you can now quickly hide columns by pressing the `x` button in the top right of the column header. Hidden columns can be reenabled from the `Columns` menu in the editor toolbar. - **Rename Columns**: Column names are now editable by clicking on them in the column header. Once a column has been renamed, the new name will appear throughout the Data Table Cell and in downstream references. If you want to revert back to the original name, use the ↩️ icon that appears when you click on the column name input. - **Column Type Assertion**: Column types are now editable as well. The Data Table Cell will automatically make an informed guess about the data type of your column, but you can override the default by selecting a new type from the dropdown in the column header. This is especially useful for numeric values with leading zeroes that become truncated by default, like zip codes. If you encounter errors when asserting a new type, you can also use the `Raw` type to see the uncoerced values to troubleshoot.4b:T408,--- January 26, 2023 ### Discover new content & keep up with your favorite authors Over the years, both internally and in our [feedback repo](https://github.com/observablehq/feedback), we have heard two consistent desires in helping you discover new content: - The ability to follow other users and stay up to date with new content on the platform - The ability to discover content on a topic or draw attention to your work in that same area We are happy to announce that both of these capabilities are now available on the Observable platform. **Follow your favorite users and teams.** See a feed of people you follow’s recent activity right on your home page. Plus, as you move about the site and hover over users’ names, you’ll see a new hovercard with quick access to basic information about that user in addition to a button that allows you to follow (or unfollow) them right where you are. The samples can come from geospatial data or be expressed in abstract dimensions, or even derived from mathematical formulas. They do not need to live on a rectangular grid, and several spatial interpolation methods allow to “fill the blanks” and generalize a point distribution. [ $The famous Mandelbrot fractal$ ](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-raster) These new marks are compatible with the recently introduced projection system, making it even easier to build maps by bringing together several layers of data. With support for the whole range of D3’s projections, you can now create base maps and render GeoJSON geometries such as polygons, lines, and points with the new Plot.geo mark. Then enrich your map by adding various layers, from the mundane points (with Plot.dot) to density maps (with Plot.density), Delaunay triangulation and Voronoi polygons (Plot.voronoi) and links (with, e.g., Plot.arrow to create flow maps). ](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-geo) Plot’s new geo mark and projection system work with Plot’s other core features, including scales, legends, faceting, and transforms. Learn to [make maps with Plot](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/plot-mapping). Plot now supports [mark-level faceting](./README.md#facet-options) via the new *mark*.**fx** and *mark*.**fy** options. Mark-level faceting makes it easier to control which marks are faceted (versus repeated across facets), especially when combining multiple datasets or specifying faceted annotations. For more details, see the [changelog](https://github.com/observablehq/plot/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#061). 4e:T83c,--- October 12, 2022 ### We are expanding our paid product offering
Today, we announce the evolution of our paid offerings, which will include 3 products for those who need to do their data work in private. - **Pro Individual** will enable individuals to work in private with databases and secrets. - **Pro Team** will give users the ability to edit and collaborate in private using secure data sources. Users will gain everything from Observable Free, plus unlimited private notebooks, databases, secrets, cloud files and a free trial. - **Enterprise** will also offer everything from Pro Teams, plus custom team onboarding, advanced SSO authentication, robust security, and priority customer support. Existing and new Observable customers will be automatically opted into a free trial Pro Individual account which will remain active until December 1, 2022. At the end of the trial period, users will be able to continue working in their paid Pro Individual account, or convert to a Free Individual account and work in public at no cost. If users choose to convert to a Free account, all of their private notebooks will remain private, and will only become editable if they choose to make them public. Note: existing paying Teams will be converted to Pro Teams and existing Enterprise teams will remain as-is. 50:T742,--- April 28, 2022 ### Version Locking for Notebook Imports
Observable now has _version locking_ for imported notebooks. This means, when you import another user's notebooks, the version that is loaded will automatically get locked so that the next time someone views your notebook, it will run the same version of that imported notebook as was run at the time they imported it. This covers any notebooks imported indirectly by that notebook as well! This will make the interconnected notebook ecosystem more stable. When you come back to an old notebook, you won't need to worry about finding that it's broken because of an unexpected change in one of your imported notebooks. You can manage these versions (lock, unlock, or update) in the new Dependency versions pane, which you can access by clicking the in the right margin of the page. Learn more about [**Version Locking**](https://observablehq.com/@observablehq/version-locking-for-notebook-imports). We would love to hear your [feedback](https://github.com/observablehq/feedback). 💬

Today's tools often expect you to know _how_ you want to present the data before writing the code that lets you see it. That's why we built the Chart cell, to help users get to those \"ah-ha!\" moments faster and easier than ever before.\n\nPoint the chart cell at any data source and select the columns that interest you. The Chart cell intelligently generates a visualization based on your selections. All it takes is a single column to get started. You can set reducers on each channel to aggregate the data, and you can facet your chart with the flip of a switch. All of the automatically selected settings can be overridden, allowing you to customize the visualization as needed.\n\n---","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","tool":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":2982,"value":"March 15, 2023 \n\n### Automatically invite users to your workspace\n\nPro and Enterprise workspace owners can now automatically invite members of your organization to your workspace based on your domain. The new arrow mark draws arrows between pairs of points. It is similar to the link mark, except it is suitable for directed edges (say for representing change over time) and supports a configurable arrowhead. It also supports “swoopy” arrows with the bend option, and insets for arrows to shorten the arrow’s start or end.
