Staying home, before the orders

These charts compare the reduction in movement with new coronavirus cases in different counties. They show that many Floridians decided to stay home in mid-March, well before the first counties issued stay-at-home orders. By the time the whole state shut down, the number of new infections in most counties was already near its peak.

Only includes counties that have had at least 100 cases. The movement data, from Descartes Labs, is based on the median “longest trip” taken on a given day among a sample of cell phones in that county. It compares that to trips taken from mid-February to early March. Both lines are seven-day rolling averages, which smooths out day-to-day fluctuations to reveal longer-term trends. Descartes Labs did not release data for April 20 because of quality-control problems.
