Focus on 2018 Playoffs

Playoffs are a competition that takes place right after the regular season. The best 8 teams from each conference are selected and will meet until only one team remains. Each match is a best-of-seven games and the winner can go to the next round, up to the finale. Playoffs are extremely demanding, teams and players must perform steadily and at their best level all the competition. Thereby, looking at statistics during playoffs is good way to assess players quality.

To do so, two players are compared, by showing their season’s overall statistics and a heatmap of their shots during playoffs. In order to select players to compare, you can either pick a team on the map and select a player from this team (left player) or you can directly select a player from the complete list (right player). Then you can choose to display different kinds of shoots using the two selectors.

A great player should be able to shoot and score from various angles and distances from the basket. Hence great players tend to have a bigger area on the heatmap. LeBron James is certainly one of the best example, his heatmap covers almost all the inside of the tree points line.

From those heatmaps, some position of players can easily be guessed. For example, centers almost only shoot from under the basket: they are tall and basically wait under the basket for other teammates to pass the ball so they can score. In the same manner, point guards and shooting guards both shoot from a distance but shooting guards shot more from the side. This can be seen by comparing Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
