The dimension of **Years** (temporal) is displayed on the x-axis. Towards the left numbers decrease and towards the right numbers increase (1960 to 2020)
The dimension **Country** (nominal) was used in the blue bargraph to demonstrate how many countries participated in each year.
The dimension **Total Participants** (quantitative) was used to illustrate how many participants attended each year.
The dimension **Gold** (quantitative) was used to illustrate how many gold medals were awarded
The dimension **Silver** (quantitative) was used to illustrate how many gold medals were awarded
The dimension **Bronze** (quantitative) was used to illustrate how many gold medals were awarded

### Visual Feature

**Color:** helps users differentiate and recognize dimensions with less cognitive load. Additionally, the colors were chosen from Colin Ware’s suggested 12 colors.
**opacity:** helps\ make the horizontal grid lines behind, visible. This makes it easier to gauge how many records each bar counts.
**Bar width:** The bar width was designed to be more prominent in the blue and red bar graphs because it allows for the years in the x-axis to be read more easily.

### Visualization idiom

**Data:** The dimensions discussed above are used to help the user of the visualization discover what they seek with respect to the dataset.
**Design:** Bar graphs were used to display the information because they are recognized easily and display information in a way that reduces the cognitive load for the viewers. Colors were chosen to help the user easily distinguish that the bar graphs illustrate different dimensions, which helps reduce cognitive load.
**Interactions:** All bar graphs use tooltips as a form of interaction to give information on demand and to help get specific and accurate data. Another interaction that affects all bar graphs is the selection of countries at the bottom of the multiview. This interaction allows users to choose what country they would like to find more information about. For instance, if they choose Canada, they will see how many paralympic games they attended, how many participants they had, and what medals they achieved for those years.

### Explain how the visualization addresses a particular question or questions and justify the particular design decisions - **Questions Answered:** How many athletes attended each Paralympic Games? Which countries sent what number of athletes? Which countries were the most successful (won the most medals, won the most gold medals)?

The visualization demonstrates the overall attending population each year for the Paralympic Games but can be filtered to specific countries by using the dropdown at the bottom left. This feature allows users to gain an overview of the question and further explore subsets of the question. The visualization demonstrates the outer question **"How many athletes attended each Paralympic Games?"** in the red multiview, and the blue multiview is meant to augment the information. It helps answer the question by giving users another dimension they can compare to and find trends or discrepancies. **"Which countries sent what number of athletes?"** was answered by utilizing the dropdown because users can individually inquire about specific countries they want. The final question the visualization answers is, **"Which countries were the most successful (won the most medals, won the most gold medals)?"** Users can see how many medals were won (gold, silver, bronze) as a whole for each year, and they are also able to choose specific countries to see how they performed throughout the years.
