Chrome displays its warning below the cell, so there might be a z-index problem here.

Unfortunately this is a limitation in how Chrome chose to implement validation messages (using HTML instead of native elements), and it’s not fixable by us because the content must live in a sandboxed iframe on Observable. This is not an issue with other browsers, and also isn’t a problem if the cell is unpinned.

For me (Chrome) the variable "essay" is evaluated to "" BEFORE the submit button is pressed.
