| Alpine to Zamia | Boulder |34:Ta36,The core of Denver comprises of two slightly-offset diagonal street grids on either side of the confluence of Cherry Creek into the South Platte River. These were the rival towns of Auraria and Denver City, founded within weeks of each other in 1858 without any official grant from the federal government. As the small towns grew and merged into a single city, they were bounded by an initial land grant, in 1864, by straight borders on the south and east. These edges developed into thoroughfares out of town- Colfax to the gold fields in the west and Broadway pointed south along the Front Range to Santa Fe. As further settlements were added, they were built on a new grid pattern in the cardinal directions (following federal land policy). That's not to say development was well-planned. Even today, you can see many mismatched intersections along East Colfax Avenue where rival developers ignored each others work. Streets changed names regularly and names were repeated in different parts of the grid. Street addresses were little help in locating the building they belonged to. The first step toward rationalization came in 1871, when east-west avenues were renumbered to match with the the diagonal streets they intersected with at Broadway. This placed First Avenue one block north of Ellsworth, establishing a new origin point from which all street numbers (and numbered avenues) would be derived. The second step was set in motion by Howard C. Maloney, a bookkeeper at the Denver Union Water Company. He spearheaded an effort to rename some existing streets and plan names for future streets so that they would remain consistent from one side of the metro are to the other. His plan established three sets of street names- each in alphabetical order. West of the city, Acoma to Zuni generally honored the native peoples of the American West- an homage to Maloney's earlier career as an Indian agent. Beyond that, Alcott to Zenobia were named for American authors. On the East side of town, Maloney covered the same area with a single pass through the alphabet by including two streets for each letter (Albion to Yosemite). One is a famous place or person (generally British) and the other is a tree or other plant. As suburbs were established, most followed the same street plan. Today, the north-south streets of the Denver metro area loop through the alphabet ten times. They reach from the northern edge of Adams County to the southern end of Jefferson & Arapahoe counties. Other, smaller patterns can be found in some of the east-west streets, along with smaller grids in Broomfield and Boulder.35:[] 30:{"id":"cd93d78a1c9cf3cd","slug":"denver-streets","title":"Denver's Alphabetical Streets","thumbnail":"28cac4ce227105c4814a1a28015c13ad8300104a08b3fd663d214964472dab27","access_level":"public","create_time":"$D2023-02-08T16:28:37.877Z","update_time":"$D2023-02-13T22:34:38.781Z","view_time":null,"first_public_time":"$D2023-02-08T16:28:37.877Z","has_unpublished_edits":null,"fork":false,"stars":2,"starred":false,"owner":{"type":"team","id":"2dcf635f2ad2abcd","login":"carpiediem","name":"Ryan Carpenter","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/099062c9e32d4fc8c95f9700cd2719a63eb06d59922f278c2fdaaf7770c8a89a","tier":"starter_2024"},"version":188,"publish_version":null,"role":null,"authored":false,"authors":[{"type":"individual","id":"8acf04ce124329c4","login":"carpiediem","name":"Ryan Carpenter","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/099062c9e32d4fc8c95f9700cd2719a63eb06d59922f278c2fdaaf7770c8a89a","tier":null}],"members":[{"type":"individual","id":"8acf04ce124329c4","login":"carpiediem","name":"Ryan Carpenter","avatar_url":"https://avatars-next.observableusercontent.com/099062c9e32d4fc8c95f9700cd2719a63eb06d59922f278c2fdaaf7770c8a89a","tier":null,"role":"editor"}],"comments":[],"custom_thumbnail":false,"trashed":false,"lapsed":null,"subscribed":null,"forks":0,"collection":null,"type":"notebook","body":{"titling":"auto","title":"Denver's Alphabetical Streets","cells":[{"id":46,"value":"# Denver's Alphabetical Streets","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":0,"value":"$32","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"ojs","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"$undefined","database":"$undefined"},{"id":58,"value":"$33","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":105,"value":"$34","pinned":false,"hidden":false,"mode":"md","author":"$undefined","summary":"$undefined","providerMetadata":"$undefined","attachments":"$undefined","output":"","database":"$undefined"},{"id":103,"value":"This map was inspired by [a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Denver/comments/lqjnqo/denvers_alphabetical_streets/) of [Peter Gorman](https://www.barelymaps.com/about)'s list of Denver steet names on [reddit.com/r/Denver](https://www.reddit.com/r/Denver).
