If you read the background color as the possible distribution of species in the different regions, you begin to get a feel for what each interpolation method does. In this case the _random-walk_ method is clearly the best: where there are enough samples of the same color, the interpolated color is almost solid. In other words, we can be pretty sure that a new iris whose measurements are in the ${iriscolor("versicolor")} region would indeed be versicolor. Where there is more doubt—either because we’re in a region that has both ${iriscolor("versicolor")} and ${iriscolor("virginica")}, or because we’re far from any existing sample—there is more noise. In that case, the local mixing of colors corresponds (more or less) to the relative probabilities of each species. (This map of probabilities is what a machine-learning algorithm tries to figure.)
